Areas of Practice
- Professional negligence
- Public liability
- Equal opportunity/discrimination
Jessica’s practice at the Bar has built on the experience she gained as a solicitor in torts and insurance law, further honed by her term as Associate
to His Honour Stephen Kaye in the Supreme Court. Her practice now broadly encompasses most aspects of public law (with a particular focus on tort and
administrative law), commercial and employment law.
In the context of tort law, Jess has developed a particular interest in professional and public liability. She has been involved in significant Supreme
Court litigation arising from the Victorian bushfires, involving the imposition of novel common law and statutory duties of care alleged to be owed
by public authorities. She has also appeared at trial and appellate level in the Federal Court in hearings involving judicial review, and in the AAT
for merits review hearings, and has experience in preparing applications involving public interest immunity.
Jess’s employment law experience includes unlawful termination and adverse action claims, and extends to discrimination and equal opportunity hearings.
She also has an interest in cases involving restraint of trade and breach of fiduciary duties within an employment context, and appears regularly in
the Federal Court, VCAT and at Fair Work Australia in relation to such matters.
Jess maintains a broad commercial practice and is available to provide advice, draw pleadings and appear at interlocutory and final hearings. She is often
called upon to provide advice regarding contracts of insurance, and has a particular interest in matters involving the Insurance Contracts Act.
She is a member of the Bar's Pro Bono committee.
