Ria has diverse and extensive tax experience in Australian and international tax law having practised in the field for many years.

On 22 July 2017, the former Minister for Revenue and Financial Services, the Hon Kelly O’Dwyer MP appointed Ria as a part-time member of the Tax Practitioners Board for a 3 year term.

Since December 2017, Ria has also been appointed a member of the UN Subcommittee on Dispute Avoidance and Resolution.

Prior to the Bar, Ria gained extensive tax experience working in large law firms (Clayton Utz and Arnold Bloch Leiber) and large accounting firms (Ernst & Young and Deloitte) providing tax advice to a range of clients from multinationals, large private family groups to high-net-wealth individuals.

Ria’s tax experience is diverse having advised on ‘front-end’ tax issues (e.g. income tax, international tax, tax planning, financing transactions and IPOs) to ‘back-end’ tax issues (e.g. tax audits and disputes, settlement negotiations and conduct of litigation).

At the Bar, Ria has undertaken the following work:

  • appeared for private and government clients in the Supreme Court, County Court, AAT and Family Court (Full Court) (test case), and in alternative dispute resolution processes;
  • provided advice and opinions to international and national law firms on:
    • complex tax technical issues, in the areas of income tax, capital gains tax, international tax, CFCs, transferor trusts, transfer pricing, interest withholding tax, tax treaties, tax residency, taxation of trusts, stamp duty, deceased estates, goods and services tax, payroll tax, wine equalisation tax, land tax, small business tax concessions and research and development tax incentives;
    • the Australian income tax implications for Australian tax residents holding interests in complex multi-jurisdictional offshore structures (including Liechtenstein and Panamanian Foundations);
    • successfully assisted taxpayers with Offshore Voluntary Disclosures (including the ATO’s Project DO IT);
    • the prospects of success of a case and the conduct of a case including the associated evidentiary and strategic procedural issues; and
  • drafted and settled various court-related documents and contracts including Deeds of Settlement with the Commissioner of Taxation.

Ria has a Bachelor of Science (majoring: Pharmacology and Biochemistry) (Distinction), a Bachelor of Laws from Monash University, and a Master of Laws (Hons) with First Class Honours in Tax Litigation and Current Issues in Tax Avoidance from the University of Melbourne.

She is a Chartered Tax Adviser of The Tax Institute, a Committee member of the Tax Bar Association, and a member of the International Fiscal Association.

Upon invitation, Ria participates in discussions at an annual International Tax Forum with 70 leading global tax advisers on current and emerging international tax issues.
