Following admission to practice in Victoria and graduate study at the London School of Economics, Sam taught and researched in the Universities of Melbourne and London.
From 1991 to 2000, he was the Sir Keith Aickin Professor of Commercial Law at Monash University, and since 2001 he has held a fractional appointment as Professor of Law at the University of Melbourne.
Sam has published a number of specialist texts in the areas of Intellectual Property and Conflicts of Laws as well as various articles in learned and professional journals and papers at national and international conferences.
He is also a former member of the Commonwealth Copyright Tribunal and a former president of the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand. From 2001- 2010, he was a part-time commissioner of the Victorian Law Reform Commission.
