Lachlan practices in commercial, administrative and taxation law.
Lachlan has appeared in a wide range of disputes in the High Court, Full Federal Court, Federal Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, as well as the Banking Royal Commission and Royal Commission into Police Informants.
He advises on federal and state tax disputes, including income tax, Part IVA, transfer pricing, capital/revenue, consolidation, controlled foreign companies, CGT, GST, stamp duty, payroll tax, R&D and international matters.
He also advises on commercial and corporations law matters, including financial services matters, ASIC regulatory disputes (frequently acting for ASIC), directors duties, misleading and deceptive conduct, insolvency, partnerships and contractual matters. Lachlan has experience with matters of privilege and complex matters of admissibility.
Before coming to the Bar, Lachlan was in the Commonwealth Treasury Portfolio and held the role as the legal adviser to the Federal Treasurer of Australia, covering taxation, foreign investment and financial services. He oversaw the development and introduction of significant Commonwealth legislative and regulatory reforms, and advised Government on regulatory reform and foreign investment approvals.
Prior to that Lachlan was a Managing Solicitor at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he practised in taxation litigation and advised on some of Australia’s largest and most complex taxation matters.
Lachlan regularly represents both the Commonwealth and private clients.
He graduated with a Masters with Distinction from the University of Oxford, and Bachelors in Laws and Engineering from the University of Melbourne. He sits on the Victorian Bar Audit, Finance & Risk Committee and was formerly on the Victorian Bar Probono Committee. He is also a director of various not-for-profit and commercial organisations including the National Trust of Australia, National Trust of Victoria Foundation, Bromleigh Capital Pty Ltd and FIA Australia Pty Ltd.
