Born Melbourne Victoria and completed B.Comm/LLB at University of Melbourne 1980.
After completing Articles in 1981 and after a short time as a solicitor, John joined the bar in 1982, reading with Brian Collis Q.C.
Early years at the bar saw John with a Common Law practice, in all jurisdictions in Victoria.
John based himself in Gippsland at Sale from 1984 and started the "Gippsland" Bar, appearing in Personal Injury, Industrial Accident, Family law, Criminal and Commercial matters in the County and Supreme Court, whilst maintaining a busy practice in the Magistrates Court
He established the Gippsland Bar in 1984 with chambers in Sale approved by the Bar Council and appeared throughout Gippsland in the Magistrates', County, Supreme and Family Courts 1984 - 1989.
From 1989 until 1993 John was in Gippsland working as a Consultant Solicitor until 1993 when he moved back to the Mornington Peninsula and built up a sole practitioner firm to three lawyers, and at one stage 11 support staff.
John's practice was very broad, covering Personal Injuries, Commercial, Family Law, Criminal and Appearance work.
John was first accredited as an ADR Specialist by the LIV 1996, and as a Nationally Accredited Mediator in 2013 (AIFLAM). He became a listed Family Law Arbitrator in 2016.
In 2006, John sold his practice and moved to Queensland after sailing for nearly 12 months on the East Coast of Australia. In 2007 he practised as a solicitor on teh Gold Coast, then joined the Queensland bar in 2008 - 2012.
John's areas of practice in Queensland were mainly in Criminal and Family Law.
Upon returning to Victoria at teh end of 2012, John worked in Albury managing the Family Law and Estate Litigation practice of Slater & Gordon for Wagga Wagga, Albury-Wodonga and Wangaratta offices. During that time he acted in many "farming" cases, and completed Specialist qualification in Family Law with the L.I.V.
John has practical experience in Building and Construction having project managed construction of general domestic housing, and multi-level commercial/residential unit developments in West Melbourne and Caulfield and completed Certificate III in OH&S 2011, and understands the building process and those involved, and the types of disputes that may arise from both a legal and a "hands on" perspective.
Since returning to the Victorian bar in 2014, John has focussed on all aspects of Family Law appearing regularly in the Federal Circuit Court and Family Court, in Trials, Pre-trial, Directions and Interlocutory Applications, and in the Family Court of Appeal and has conducted numerous Mediations in Property and Children's matters, as appointed Mediator and as a party's representative.

John is quite familiar with "circuit" sittings having appeared regularly in Albury, Bendigo, Ballarat, Paramatta and Sydney, and is more than willing to travel.
