Liam practices in general commercial, construction and insurance litigation.

Liam has acted in numerous substantial and complex construction disputes in the Supreme, County and Federal Courts as well as in commercial arbitrations and expert determinations. Liam is experienced in acting for claimants and respondents in disputes under the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act (Vic) 2002, including applications for judicial review.

He also regularly represents clients involved in domestic building disputes in VCAT and in statutory appeals before the Building Appeals Board.

Prior to coming to the Bar, Liam worked as a solicitor in Norton Rose Australia’s construction and engineering group, having completed articles at that firm.

Liam is a member of the Young Insurance Professionals Society, the Society of Construction Law Australia and the Building Dispute Practitioner Society. Liam was recognised in the peer reviewed Doyles Guide as a leading junior construction law barrister in 2016.

Construction Engineering (Aust) Pty Ltd v Adams Engineering Pty Ltd (2017)

Supreme Court Proceeding. Acted for the head contractor in a claim against a civil and structural engineer in relation to claims for additional construction and delay costs in relation to the delivery of a major shopping centre. A major component of the dispute was referred to a Special Referee pursuant to O 50 of the Supreme Court (General Civil Procedure) Rules 2015 (Vic) (led by M Roberts QC).

SSC Plenty Road Pty Ltd v Construction Engineering (Aust) Pty Ltd [2016] VSCA 119

Court of Appeal Proceeding. Acted for the head contractor defending an appeal involving the application of the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act 2002 (Vic) (led by T Margetts QC).

Krongold Constructions (Aust) Pty Ltd v SR & RS Wales Pty Ltd [2016]VSC 94

Supreme Court Proceeding. Application for judicial review of an adjudication determination made under the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act 2002 (Vic)(led by Mark Robins QC).

Milburn Lake Pty Ltd (trading as Irwin Stockfeeds) v Andritz Pty Ltd [2016] VSC 3

Supreme Court Proceeding. Acted for the head contractor in a dispute over the construction of a stockfeed mill, involving both arbitration proceedings and Supreme Court proceedings concerning an application for judicial review of an adjudication determination madeunder the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act 2002 (Vic) (led by M Roberts QC)

Mirvac Commercial Sub SPV Pty Limited ats S.H.L Nominees Proprietary Limited and Enward Pty Ltd (2016) (Building Appeals Board)

Acted for the developer of a large commercial tower in the Melbourne CBD, in an appeal under the protection works provisions of the Building Act 1993 (Vic) before the Building Appeals Board (appearing alone).

CES-Queen (Vic) Pty Ltd v Colonial Range Pty Ltd (2016)

Supreme Court Proceeding. Acted for the developer in several judicial review proceedings in the Supreme Court and appeals before the Building Appeals Board pursuant to the protection work provision of the Building Act 1993 (Vic) (led by M Roberts QC).

Hansen & Yuncken and Leighton Contractors Joint Venture v SA Health Partnership Nominees Pty Ltd v SA Health Partnership Nominees Pty Ltd (2015)(Expert Determination/ Arbitration).

Acted for the head contractor in a dispute involving the construction of the New Royal Adelaide Hospital (led by David Levin QC).

Façade Treatment Engineering v Brookfield Multiplex [2015] VSC 41

Supreme Court Proceeding. Application for judicial review of an adjudication determination made under the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act 2002 (Vic) (led by M Roberts QC).

QIC Limited ats Australian Soap Company Pty Ltd (2015) (Building Appeals Board)

Acted for the developer of a 42 storey office tower and 19 storey hotel in the Melbourne CBD, in an appeal under the protection works provisions of the Building Act 1993 (Vic) before the Building Appeals Board (appearing alone).

Baron Forge Contractors Pty Ltd v Vaughan Constructions Pty Ltd [2015] VCC 1424

County Court Proceeding. Acted for the contractor in defending an application for summary judgment under the provisions of the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act 2002 (Vic) (appearing alone).

Lion-Dairy & Drinks Pty Limited & Ors v Sinclair Knight Merz Pty Limited (2015):

Federal Court Proceeding. Acted for an engineering consultant in a dispute in the Federal Court of Australia (Sydney) concerning allegations of misleading and deceptive conduct, breach of contract and negligence in relation the design and construction of a wastewater treatment plant (led by T Margetts QC)

Downer EDI Engineering Power Pty Ltd v Patterson Cheney Pty Ltd & Anor (2014):

Supreme Court Proceeding. Acting for a car dealership in defence of a product liability claim (made under the provisions of the Trade Practices Act 1974 (Cth)) in the Supreme Court of Victoria involving allegations that an allegedly defective truck caused a fire in a warehouse resulting in substantial damage (appearing alone).

Thiess Degremont Joint Venture v AquaSure (2013): Acted for the head contractor in a dispute involving claims for, inter alia, extensions of time and delay costs in relation to the construction of the Victorian Desalination Plant (led by J Digby QC and M Roberts QC).

Director of Housing v Structx Pty Ltd trading as Bizibuilders and Anor [2011] VSC 410

Supreme Court Proceeding. Application for judicial review of an adjudication determination made under the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act 2002 (Vic) (appearing alone).
